The Irmo High Symphonic Winds
and Symphonic Band
have
earned consistent superior
ratings at the South Carolina
Band Directors Association
concert band functions for more
than a decade. Additionally,
during the 1990's the Symphonic
Winds have performed on three
different occasions at the
University of South Carolina
Director's Symposium, appeared
at the University of Southern
Mississippi Band Workshop, the
University of Georgia's
"Jan-fest," the CBDNA/NBA
Conference in Biloxi,
Mississippi, and have given
numerous performances at South
Carolina Music Educators
Association state conventions in
Greenville, S.C. The Symphonic
Winds earned an invitation to
perform at the Bands of America
National Concert Band Festival
presented in March 1996 at the
Medinah Temple in Chicago,
Illinois, and again in March
2000 at the Murat Theater in
Indianapolis, Indiana. Both
bands have earned division
titles at the National
Adjudicator's Invitational in
Atlanta, Georgia, and also in
Chattanooga, Tennessee, where
the Symphonic Winds were awarded
the title of "National Grand
Champion." In May 2000,
the band was awarded the SUDLER
FLAG OF HONOR presented by the
John Phillip Sousa Foundation
for outstanding concert band
achievements.
The Irmo High Marching Band
earned its tenth consecutive
South Carolina State 5A
Championship title (eleven
overall) with the 2003 Marching
Band Show. The school
moved to 4A in Fall 2004.
The Marching Band has
participated in regional and
Grand National Bands of America
marching competitions,
consistently placing as a
finalist in regional
competitions and twice winning
the "Esprit de Corps" award at
Grand Nationals. The marching
students represented the state
of South Carolina in the
Inaugural Parade for President
Clinton and appeared in the
Federal Express King Orange
Jamboree Parade in Miami.
The Bands of Irmo have exceeded
superiority by taking ownership
of themselves and their
performances. The leadership of
the officers and the
determination and support of the
band members and their families
makes the band a recognized
success in our community. Most
Irmo band students study
privately, and attend summer
music camps including Brevard,
Furman, Sewanee, Appalachian
State, and the University of
South Carolina. Irmo is
consistently represented by
students who earned invitations
to perform with the South Carolina
All-State and Regional Bands. Many
band students earn "Superior"
ratings at the State Solo
and Ensemble Festivals. Irmo
Bands are well represented
at the SC Governor's
School for the Arts and at the
Bands of America National High
School Honor Band. The members
of the band continue to work
diligently in their quest to be
the best. They learn about music
and a great deal about life. The
students learn to accept
responsibility, to work hard for
a common goal, and to discipline
themselves to do what is
necessary to accomplish those
goals.
